Holy Trinity Parish Church, Wentworth, South Yorkshire Holy Trinity Parish Church, Wentworth

I sought to explore the design theme of “Moor land” and the design to be exemplified in the verse “ I am the resurrection and the life” and to celebrate the constant or “ Our Lord the Redeemer” within the symbolic representation of form and colour. As well as including aspects of Wentworth estate and its community; Mr Canby’s job as land agent, also his fondness for the moor land landscape.

With the inclusion of moor land wildlife and fawner; I sort to express the narrative of God’s constant presence within the nature world. Principally the inclusion of birds as they representing mans soul within the physical world; in flight they symbolise the winged soul and the ascension to heaven.

Free standing sculpture, selected for fabrication; in the commemoration of St. Hugh in the 800th year of his association with the cathedral and the celebration of St. Hugh’s life and achievements. Within the piece of St. Hugh’s swan I sought to express and reflect aspects of Bishop Hugh’s character and his journey to his canonisation in 1220.

I used both traditional & contemporary techniques, kiln formation for the swans head, bas relief to form the feathers with metal inclusions within the back plate: traditional painting within the back plate and then all leaded up and consolidated.

Design inspiration come from a community design competition; held by the parish; evolving from psalms 46: children of the parish, drew what they wanted to feature with the window also, as part of a school project.

I took the aerial typography of the area, by the way of creativity bring all the design ideas together and for the window to still have a religious narrative.

In the design brief, the client wanted firstly for the window to be aesthetically sympathetic to his home built in the 1880; they also wanted one rose for each of his 3 daughters in specified colours. After a period of consultation, I took my inspiration from the Arts & Craft movement to visualise the final design, selected for fabrication.

Acid etched, painted, silver stained, enamelled, then leaded and consolidated.
